Common Kitchen Remodel Mistakes to Avoid

Common Kitchen Remodel Mistakes to Avoid

A lot of thought goes into a kitchen remodel, since this multi-purpose space is often the center of a home and the hub of most family activity. When approaching your remodeling plan, asking the right questions now can help you achieve the busy, useful kitchen space you’ve been dreaming of without creating layout awkwardness later.

To help you avoid unnecessary oversights, here is a list of common kitchen remodel mistakes that happen more often than they should:

  1. Skimping on cabinet storage.
Today there are countless storage solutions to help you maximize your kitchen, so don’t skimp!  Storage solutions such as pantries and super cabinets go a long way. So, plan on more than you think you will need.
  2. Not having fun!
The backsplash is one of the main focal points of your kitchen, try playing with different styles to make it really pop. Have fun with color: use different shades of the same tone or think about what pieces of art you want on your walls to accent a primary color.
  3. Sweat the small stuff.
Don’t pass on add-ons and storage features that seem small. An additional drawer divider, pantry pullout or lazy susans are storage solutions that will increase your kitchen storage efficiency.  In addition, these will be much pricier to add on down the road.
  4. Don’t forget your workflow.
Remember that you spend most of your time at the sink, stove and refrigerator in your kitchen.  Make sure these areas and appliances are in an efficient location that is relevant to one another.  Oftentimes, this is referred to as the kitchen “work triangle.”
  5. Giving up counter space.
This is an area you will surely regret down the line. Counter space is one of the most important elements of your kitchen- don’t settle for less!
  6. Even if you consider yourself the DIY-type, don’t go at it alone.
Make sure to consult a kitchen design expert at your local GNH Lumber before beginning your project. These professionals will be able to offer tips, advice, and offer you ideas that you haven’t already considered.
  7. Forgetting the big picture.
While planning your kitchen renovation, don’t forget to consider every element; wall color, backsplash, flooring, cabinets, cabinet hardware. Think about how it will all tie together in the final product.
  8. Appliances first.
If you’re giving your kitchen a total makeover, make sure to choose your appliances first. It’s easier to design your cabinets and countertops to fit appliances like your refrigerator and dishwasher, rather than the other way around.

There you have it- what mistakes not to make when remodeling your kitchen. Don’t forget to visit your local GNH Lumber and speak to an expert who can help you with everything from the big picture to the small details, that’s what they’re there for!
